Fine Art Photography Print

This photograph was made at Kalagala Falls, Uganda, during the tenth anniversary edition of Nyege Nyege Festival. Shot at the festival’s main stage, the image captures a guest artist mid-performance, framed by light, shadow, and sound. A silhouetted crowd appears in the foreground, while the artist stands further back, microphone held close, energy radiating through posture and presence as the stage lights carve graphic shapes into the night.

For me, this image carries deep personal meaning. In 2015, Kampala was where I attended my first event photography workshop, covering a music and arts festival that helped define my early relationship with photography. That experience shaped how I learned to work in fast-moving, crowded spaces, and ultimately how I began to see the street itself as a stage when I returned to Lagos.

Ten years later, I found myself back in Uganda, this time at Nyege Nyege, one of East Africa’s most significant music festivals, drawing audiences and artists from across the world. I arrived this time, not as a student, but as an independent multimedia journalist, covering the festival for a pan-African publication. The symmetry was impossible to miss: ten years since my first festival workshop, and ten years of Nyege Nyege itself.

This image marks that convergence. It highlights growth without forgetting origins, and progress without detachment. It reflects a path that began in shared rhythm and continues in observation, documentation, and trust in lived experience.

Printed as part of On the Road, Still Learning, a small end-of-year pan African collection spanning Nigeria and Uganda, this photograph closes the collection with sound, light, and memory, a reminder that beginnings often reveal themselves only when you return.
